Alignment Sticks in Golf Training: Short Game (Chipping)

In the short game, alignment sticks help you find the correct alignment and ideal swing path for chips and pitches. They're ideal for developing consistent feel and distance control.

Aim of the exercise:

  • The exercises aim to teach a clean and repeatable swing. This is crucial for playing the ball precisely toward the hole from different lies.

Execution of the exercise:

Insert an alignment stick into the ground to mark the target line. A second stick can be used to visualize the optimal swing path.

  • Alignment: Stand with your feet slightly open toward the target. Place the ball slightly behind the center of your stance. Point the alignment sticks toward your target and use them to ensure your feet, knees, and hips are parallel.
  • Swing path: Place a second stick on the ground, forming a line pointing slightly inward from the target point. This helps encourage a slight "in-to-out" swing, which is typical of many good chippers.
  • Hand Position: Insert an alignment stick through the grip of your wedge so that it points upward on your left side. The stick should not touch your body during impact, which promotes proper rotation and a leading-edge shot.

What you should pay attention to:

Make sure your swing is smooth and even, keeping your wrist stable. A common mistake is "spooning" the ball, where your wrist bends at impact. The goal is to hit the ball first, then the ground.
